So a lot of people want action and fighting over election reform, yeah? I personally think the goal of overturning this past election is so far-fetched and would be so unpopular (do you really think Kerry won the popular vote?) that it's probably not worth the fight. The battle for making John Kerry president is over for me. But the battle to modernize our electoral system so that it is completely transparent and everyone's right to vote is guaranteed goes on. There's a whole host of reforms to get behind and which we could potentially get passed with broad bipartisan support. I suggest we take a lesson from our de facto Fearless Leader and march on Washington.
Step one: have a "Winter's Soldier" like meeting where you invite everyone from Black Box Voting.com to people who were disenfranchised in this year's election. Have everybody tell their stories of impropriety and hackable voting machines. Collect all the evidence about irregularities in the 2004 election and systemic problems and come up with a report full of suggestions to ensure clean and fair elections in the future.
Step two: Form a group and organize a march on Washington. Have one member of the group be a very articulate and attractive person and have them act as spokesperson. Form alliances with sympathetic Senators and Representatives. Do some political theater. Throw your voter registration card over the fence of the White House. Camp out on the capitol steps until the Congress passes your legislation or let's your spokesperson speak to committee.
Step three: Have your good looking and articulate spokesperson go on TV and demand paper trails and same day registration and a federal voting day holiday and the abolition of the electoral college and anything else they think they can plausibly get. Have them tear apart right-wing opposition and representatives from Diebold on cable talk shows with wit, facts, and passion.
Step four: repeat as necessary until every election is free and fair and transparent and everybody's right to vote is guaranteed.
